"Where?"

Where are recent comments about Grey Gardens posted? I can't find them. Search is no help.

But I will weaken to tell you that the comments are in the most recent Celebrity Apprentice thread.

So I think this is the best costume for today.

Where do we go from here, Movies, TV or Celebrity Apprentice?

I am very curious to hear opinions on the HBO remake - are you planning on watching it?

I watched the documentary on YouTube the other night, one part at a time. Was everything included there? I'm not sure. There was no intro, no commentary from anyone. It was just the two women talking and singing in the midst of cats, raccoons, and occasionally Jerry. A grocery delivery guy and a couple of birthday guests were the only other outsiders shown at the house.

I think the two Edies would have been okay to be around. In small doses. After the flea bombs had gone off and aired out, and after the cat crap was scraped up. (It was so awful and mesmerizing to see a cat being allowed to go behind the beautiful portrait of Big Edie that sat on the floor.)

Do you think the two women were showing off for and flirting with the Maysles Brothers? I think they loved the attention. Since the Maysles weren't flinching, the woman felt free and happy to perform for them.

I imagine the saddest part of the story being the time after the Maysles left Grey Gardens.

You know how an interesting movie can make you want to go to Italy, or make love on a real train, or sing and dance in a high school gym? This movie makes you want to weed the garden, clean closets and rethink the placement of the giant brooch on your coshtume.

And do you really need anything else?

I totally agree that they were showing off for and flirting with the Maysles, although I think the exact same things would have been said, sang, and done if no one had been there - the surreal insanity of the Beales never ends. I think the saddest part of the story, for me, was the realization that Big Edie pretty much ruined Little Edie's life because she didn't want to be alone. Poor Little Edie should have been in Manhattan sharing her wonderful self with the whole world instead of in that decaying mansion being driven insane by that selfish old bitch of a mother.

This movie makes me want to fix up some corn on the cob on a hot plate in my bedroom.

I'm not sure the women would have felt free to put on shows for each other alone. Neither seemed thrilled to be an audience member. Maybe they could get away with snippets of shows but not full blown, marching, flag-twirling production numbers.

It's difficult for me to decide who was the other's keeper most. Big Edie obviously needed Little Edie to be her distracted indentured servant. But if Little Edie had been free could she have survived on her own in the city? Without a mother or man to support her? Would the younger Beale have been any happier in another place? Where she was she had the sun and the sea. She could sing and dance in the middle the afternoon, in the middle in of the yard. She had ice cream whenever she wanted. She got to spend her time idly, possibly even idyllically at times (if the mess could be ignored).

Little Edie's captivity may have seemed worse to her when she realized what the Maysles Brothers were seeing.

Was Grey Gardens a (filthy) safe haven for two thrown-away women, or did its confines drive at least one of them mad?

But I remember Little Edie saying something about how her mother wouldn't let her go to Manhattan to be with some guy, which is why I feel the way I do about Big Edie. Of course, her mother could have been trying to protect Little Edie from certain heartbreak, but you gotta cut the apron strings sometime. That's my main interest in seeing the HBO remake...what happened pre-reclusion to make them like that.

I don't think Little Edie needed an actual physical audience for her flag-twirling because I think she always imagined someone was watching her all the time. Who knows how many fashion shows & variety numbers were performed in Grey Gardens...
